SMB Genealogical Services is a California-based business managed by

Susannah Becker and located in Pleasanton, California.

Research services are focused on finding ancestors, fixing mistakes in family trees, and finding biological parents, siblings, or children in the context of adoption.   Research is focused primarily on United States records from the late 1700's

forward, with special focus on states including California, Virginia,

Kentucky, and Missouri.  Internationally, focus areas include Irish,

Swiss, and Danish family history research. DNA results can help

affirm documentary findings, or they can be a starting point to

understanding and identifying the biological family tree.

Family history discoveries can be shared and passed on as a gift to future generations.  We are all part of a greater tapestry of history. SMB Genealogical Services will help you discover tangible evidence of your relatives' lives, bringing to life their stories and gaining a better understanding of your place in history.

My Story

Working as a therapist for many years, in hospital settings and in private practice, I counseled individuals, couples, and families.  I found the diversity of family life and the richness of personal journeys fascinating. Whether learning new information about a key relationship, finding a missing relative, or learning new information about your ancestors, I have a unique background to understand some of the complexities of family situations and approach research findings with sensitivity, discretion, and care.

Qualifications

For over twenty five years, I have been researching my own family history.  After a career change, I took courses from top genealogists in the field to strengthen my research abilities and learn standards of professional practice.  I completed Boston University's Genealogical Research Studies Certificate Program as well as the 14 month ProGen program, where I learned investigative techniques in documentary and genetic genealogy.  I have taken numerous workshops and classes to sharpen my research skills. A lifelong learner, I hold a Bachelor's degree in French Studies and a Master's degree in Social Welfare, both from University of California at Berkeley.  I also hold a Master's in English from University of New Orleans.  This academic background has prepared me with strong research, organization, critical thinking, and writing skills.  I am a member of the National Genealogical Society and the Association of Professional Genealogists.
